The showcase tells the story of Pro Corda from its youngest students through to those who are now training to be tomorrow’s chamber music educators, through to those whose adult lives have been shaped by chamber music. It is the story of chamber music at the heart of lives, not just on the concert platform. All proceeds will go directly to the Pro Corda scholarship fund to enable those who cannot afford course fees to access this unique and exceptional training.

Beethoven Piano Trio – ‘The Ghost’
Brahms Piano Trio no. 1 in b major op. 8

Two brilliant piano trios by Beethoven and Brahms performed in the heart of London by three of the UK’s leading chamber musicians in the stunning setting of St James’ Church by candlelight.

The West End’s definitive chamber music series continues in 2020 with a season of five concerts showcasing the finest chamber music of Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. The Piccadilly Chamber Music Series aims to give an exciting new platform for the world’s greatest classical music in a highly accessible format in the heart of London.

This evening’s concert features two of the greatest works in the piano trio repertoire: Beethoven’s “Ghost Trio” takes the lister on an exhilarating journey of beauty and drama, written at the height of the composer’s creative powers. This is contrasted with the heavily romantic Piano Trio in B major, by a young Brahms combining virtuosity with beautiful singing melodies shared between all three instruments

Rowena Calvert is one of the UK’s most dynamic cellists and is artistic director of the Hertord International Chamber Music Series. Natalie Klouda is in great demand as soloist and chamber musician and runs the Highgate International Chamber Music Festival. In 2016 Warren Mailley-Smith became the first british pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works from memory. One of the UK’s busiest concert pianists, he is Artistic director of The Piccadilly Chamber Music Series.

All Piccadilly Chamber Music Series concerts are hosted by St James’s Church Piccadilly, a spectacular building situated on Piccadilly, designed by the great Sir Christopher Wren. This majestic London landmark, complete with outdoor marketplace, boasts a beautiful acoustic and plays host to one of the capital’s most stunning concert Fazioli pianos. Its location offers an enviable choice of bars, restaurants and hotels enabling the perfect experience to share with your loved ones and friends.

This evening’s concert features two stunning works in the Clarinet Trio repertoire. The brilliance of Beethoven’s piano writing shines through against the beautiful lyricism of the clarinet and cello. By contrast, Brahms, heavily influenced himself by Beethoven, pushes the three instruments to heightened levels of technical challenges and romantic expression. The programme is complemented by the ever-popular Shepherd on the Rock by Schubert for soprano, clarinet and piano.

Clarinettist Kristal Hamson has played with many of the UK’s finest orchestras, most notably the BBC Concert Orchestra, with whom she performs with regularly and at the BBC Proms. She has also given many chamber recitals at the Wigmore and Queen Elizabeth Halls.  Kristal recorded the Clarinet solos for the BBC one drama ‘Call the Midwife’ which can also be heard on the latest soundtrack. Brilliant cellist Pavlos Carvalho performs regularly throughout the UK as soloist and chamber musician, notably performing the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra last year. The stunning soprano, Susan Parkes has performed as soloist at the Royal Albert Hall and in many operas across the UK and abroad. Artistic Director of The Piccadilly Chamber Music Series, Warren Mailley-Smith has performed many times for the british royal Family. He has recently made his debuts with the RPO and this season is performing all 5 of Beethoven’s piano concertos at St Martin in the Fields.
